These are the ones to buy if you're actually on the water. Patagonia Capilene Cool Daily — £49 short sleeve, £59 long sleeve. Quick-drying recycled polyester with UPF built in, cut loose enough to not look like technical kit. Several prints in stock.

If you want something closer-fitting to wear under a wetsuit or on a board, look at rash vests instead — a Capilene shirt is comfortable but it isn't a rash vest.

Organic and recycled

Worth knowing if it matters to you: the Patagonia Fitz Roy Foothills and Great Waves Ringer Tees (£44) are undyed organic cotton — no dye at all, which cuts the water and chemical use significantly. The Mainstay Tees are £19–£34 and organic. Weird Fish Marciana £33 is organic cotton, Nilly £12 is eco jersey.
