Which one for the time of year?

Summer, water 14°C and up. A 3/2mm full suit. The C-Skins Element back zip at £99 and the O'Neill Reactor-2 at £95 are where most people start; the C-Skins Re-wired chest zip (£219) and Solace (£210) are the warmer, stretchier end.

Warm days, 17°C and up. A shorty from £70, or a 1.5mm jacket from £65 if you just want your core covered. Rip Curl's G-Bomb 1mm leggings are £49.

Winter, below 13°C. A 5/4mm or 5/3mm. The C-Skins Surflite 5/4 at £179 and Prolimit Flare 5/3 at £149 are the value end; the Rip Curl Dawn Patrol 5/3 chest zip (£279) and Manera Seafarer 5.3 front zip (£245) sit above them.

Sizing is the thing that matters most

Womens wetsuit sizing varies more between brands than you'd think, and a suit that's slightly too big will flush cold water through no matter how good the neoprene is. Our size guide gets you close, and the temperature guide tells you what thickness to look at.

If you can get to Whitstable, try a few on. It's the single best thing you can do before spending £200 on a winter suit.
